A Pin Alternative for Agencies That Need Both Sides of the Desk

A Pin alternative for recruiting agencies: Pin.com is a strong AI sourcing seat for candidates. Instalent covers candidates and clients on one engine, scored and verified rather than ranked and looked up.

A Pin Alternative for Agencies That Need Both Sides of the Desk

Pin is one of the better things to come out of the 2024 wave of AI recruiting startups: a fast natural-language search over 850 million profiles, sequences, scheduling and a light CRM, sold per seat from a free tier upwards. If you are an in-house recruiter filling engineering reqs, it is a sensible seat. The question this post answers is different. If you run an agency, half of your desk is finding clients, and a Pin seat does none of that. Here is what Instalent does for both halves, where Pin is genuinely strong, and how to decide.

What Instalent does for an agency desk, first

This is our blog, so the fair place to start is with what we built. Instalent is one engine for both halves of an agency:

  • Candidates. Paste a written brief and AI candidate sourcing searches the open market, not just a database, for people who fit, including the ones who never applied.
  • Scoring with the evidence. Candidate analysis scores every profile against the same rubric and shows why, so the shortlist survives a hiring manager's questions.
  • Verified contact details. Enrichment from multiple sources, checked in sequence, and you pay only when a value is found.
  • Clients. Client prospecting finds companies with hiring signals, the person who owns the req and a verified way to reach them, so business development runs on the same engine as sourcing.
  • Outreach and replies. Multichannel sequences that stop on reply, every answer in the unified inbox, and a reply agent that drafts under your approval.
  • An agent that runs it. The Instalent agent can run a brief every morning on a schedule or be driven from your own AI assistant over MCP.

One plan bundles all of it, with transparent self-serve pricing.

What Pin is built for

Pin is a US startup founded in 2024 by Steven Lu, seeded with $3 million from Expa, and it has real traction: 10,000-plus users, SOC 2 Type 2, a 4.8 rating on G2 by its own count, and an agencies page that talks the desk's language (multi-client pools, placement tracking, fee-structure mapping). What it does, it does quickly:

  • Search. Natural-language search over 850 million-plus profiles drawn from professional networks, GitHub, Stack Overflow, patents and publications.
  • Outreach. Multichannel sequences across email, direct messages and SMS, with AI-written personalisation.
  • Scheduling. AI interview scheduling where the candidate books directly.
  • Integrations. Bidirectional sync with 120-plus applicant tracking systems, plus Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar and Slack.

Pin publishes its own outcome claims (12 hours per recruiter per week reclaimed, 5x response rates, a 14-day average time-to-fill across agency users). We have not verified them and quote them only as Pin's claims.

On Pin pricing

As read on 21 September 2026: Free; Solo $99 per user per month (annual billing only, 500 contact credits a month); Professional $135 per user per month annual or $179 monthly (1,000 credits per seat); Business custom. Extra contact lookups are sold in credit packs listed at $50 per 500.

The half a Pin seat does not cover

Pin's own agencies page lists no business development or client prospecting feature, and that is the whole gap for an agency owner. Client acquisition has overtaken candidate shortage as the top problem on agency desks, and a sourcing seat, however good, leaves that half on spreadsheets and a sales tool built for software companies.

Three more differences matter on a working desk:

  1. Scoring with reasons. A ranked list is not the same as a score with the evidence cited against your must-haves. The second is what a hiring manager accepts.
  2. Verification versus lookup. Contact credits buy a lookup. What a desk needs is a number confirmed live and a mailbox that exists, checked across more than one source, charged only when found.
  3. The reply. Sequences are the easy half. The person who answers at nine on a Sunday needs a same-day reply in one shared inbox, drafted by an agent that knows the brief, and Pin does not position itself there.

The difference is not a feature count. Pin is a very good seat for the candidate half of the job. Instalent is a desk for both halves, and it is scored and verified rather than ranked and looked up.

A Pin alternative workflow you can run this week

  1. Take one live req and write the brief the way you would explain it to a colleague: must-haves, nice-to-haves, feeder companies, deal-breakers. How to write an AI sourcing brief if you want the template.
  2. Paste it into Instalent and let the search run. Read the scores and the reasons before you read the profiles.
  3. Enrich the top ten. Note which contact details came back verified and which did not exist.
  4. Start one sequence with a hard stop on reply, and route the replies into the shared inbox.
  5. On the same day, open client prospecting and pull the companies that opened similar reqs this month. That list is your Thursday BD hour.

Keep Pin if it is working

Nothing here requires cancelling anything. Many agencies run a sourcing seat and add Instalent for scoring, verification and the client side, then decide after a month which half of the stack is doing the work.

Where Pin still fits

An in-house recruiter with one ATS, a high volume of engineering reqs and no business development to do will get a lot from a Pin seat, and its scheduling and 120-plus integrations are real conveniences. A solo recruiter on the free tier testing whether AI search beats their boolean will learn something for nothing. If your desk has no client side, Pin is a reasonable choice and this post is not trying to talk you out of it.

Running an agency that needs both sides of the desk? Paste a brief and watch Instalent source, verify and score in minutes, then open the client side on the same engine. Get started.
